Research Associate – MF-II Core Lab

Ocean State Research Institute is seeking a full-time Research Associate (40 hours per week).

Job Description: We have a great opportunity for a Research Associate to join our research team of the CardioPulmonary Vascular Biology (CPVB) COBRE at the Ocean State Research Institute. This position will provide services to research studies that are supported by the Mitochondrial Function and In Vivo Imaging (MF- II) Core of the CPVB COBRE and report to the Core Director. The position will provide sophisticated surgical and physiology expertise in rodents to support various preclinical studies. Proven experience with survival and non-survival surgery in rodents is required. Prior experience in in vivo imaging (e.g., ultrasound, tissue doppler, micro-CT) is preferred. The position will also support other MF-II Core work and duties assigned.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine surgical procedures in rodents, such as thoracotomy, pulmonary artery banding, telemetry sensor placement, femoral artery ligation, catheter-based cardiovascular function measurements.
  • Rodent handling, anesthetic management, pre- and post-operative
  • Perform or assist in in vivo animal/organ
  • Ex vivo lung and heart perfusion, blood collection, tissue collection, and other non-survival procedures.
  • Animal work related supply and consumables tracking and
  • Record keeping, including surgical records, post-op records, and other experimental
  • Assist in the design, preparation, and execution of research
  • Prepare animal protocols and other regulatory Consult with veterinarians for best practice.
  • Learn/develop new techniques to support novel rodent animal model
  • Perform other MF-II Core work and duties
  • Provide technical training to

Education

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Biological Sciences or related

Experience

  • Proven experience with survival and non-survival surgery in
  • Prior experience in cardiopulmonary and vascular research
  • Prior experience in in vivo imaging

Description

The incumbent will work in the CardioPulmonary Vascular Biology (CPVB) Center of BioMedical Research Excellence (COBRE) Cell Isolation and Organ Function (CIOF) core.

Responsibilities

  • In all activities, adhere to Good Research Practice guidelines and maintain excellent experimental research notes.
  • The primary responsibilities of the incumbent will be to work with scientists who are interested in services provided by the CIOF. These include, but are not limited to, in vitro tissue culture; cell isolation, purification, and characterization from tissue and/or organs; performing ELISA assays; performing and gathering images of immunohistochemical or immunofluorescent slides; and performing experiments in molecular, biochemical, and cell biology.
  • Maintain up-to-date inventory of study supplies and place orders
  • Support research activities including making reagents and stocks, process clinical samples for storage and laboratory analysisOther duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (relevant field of study is preferred)
  • 1-2 years post-graduate work experience preferred but not required
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Familiarity with basic laboratory instruments and equipment – in a laboratory setting.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information – maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to follow general instructions and procedures, as provided.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills (communicate clearly and effectively via verbal and written instruction).
  • Attention to detail and ability to concentrate on multiple tasks
  • Ability to prioritize responsibilities – through completion.
  • Ability to work independently and with others in the lab – to interact respectfully with other employees, professional staff and/or external contacts.
  • Ability to work with minimal oversight, after training period
